RPMs for Broadcom 802.11 wireless drivers are now available in the rpmfusion repository of fedora 10. All we have to do is 2-3 simple steps and here is what I have done in my system.

1) Enable the rpmfusion repository

You have to enable the rpmfusion repository using the command

sudo rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

2) Update the repo and install the driver package

The package we have to install is broadcom-wl and it depends on the package kmod-wl

sudo yum update
sudo yum install broadcom-wl

3) Reboot the system

When the system boots up, network manager will then detect the Broadcom wireless device and you will be able to connect to the wireless network through it

NB: Make sure that the “broadcom” kernel module is loaded. if not, add a line “modprobe broadcom” in /etc/rc.modules (In debian or debian based distros add a line “broadcom” in /etc/modules)

The keynote speech was given by Krishnakant Mane (Friends call him KK), who is a physically challenged hacker. He is blind by birth but he use computer as a normal person and contributes to various free software projects with the help of screen reading software “Orca”.

Sujith Haridasan came up with another hacking workshop with CHDK ( Canon Hacking Development Kit). Which is a firmware run in Canon cameras to extend the functionality. He showed sone tricks like printing “hello world” on camera screen and blinking the LEDs etc…

After that Arun from SPACE and KK moderated a Open Discussion on Insight – The project which helps blind people to use computer. He also demonstrated how he uses computer for hacking with the help orca.

DAY 2

On Day 2 I was a little late due to some reasons, and when I reached the venue, Juan’s session was half on the way.

Another interesting personality was Juan Carlos Gentile who took a fabulous session on “Free Music”. He has been using Free Software for many years for video and audio processing

In general the event was a good one, Informative and most important factor I noticed was that, Media is now understanding the word “Hacker” correctly which is extremely a happy news because it became a routine of media to use the word hacker in place of cracker.

audio, better printing and webcam support, and a new faster graphical

Also on this ride are wireless connection sharing and the next evolution
in PackageKit, hooking through your multimedia applications to help
install supporting software (codecs).

For developers and system administrators on this mission, we have built
in appliance tools, Eclipse 3.4, NetBeans IDE, improved virtualization
management with remote installation and storage capabilities, RPM 4.6,
and new security auditing toolsets.

9.45ന് തന്നെ ഞാന്‍ സ്ഥലത്തെത്തി. ഞാന്‍ ചെല്ലുമ്പോള്‍ ആഷിക്കും വിമലും ഹാജര്‍. ആഷിക്കിനെ ആദ്യമായി കാണുകയാണ്. ചെറിയ ഒരു പരിചയപ്പെടല്‍. അപ്പോഴേക്കും ഒരു നഗരപ്രദക്ഷിണത്തിന്റെ കഥയുമായി(വഴി നേരാം വണ്ണം മനസ്സിലാക്കാത്തതിന്റെ ഒരോരോ കുഴപ്പങ്ങളേ..) മാക്സിനും വന്നു. 10 മണി ആയിട്ടും വേറെ ആരേയും കാണാനില്ല. എല്ലാവരും തനിമലയാളി സ്വഭാവം കാണിച്ചോ എന്ന ശങ്കയോടെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ നാലുപേരും അവിടെ അടുത്തുതന്നെയുള്ള സ്പേസിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു കെട്ടിടത്തിലേക്ക് പോയി. 5-6 കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകള്‍ സജ്ജീകരിച്ച് വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന നിശ്ശബ്ദമായ ഒരു കെട്ടിടം. ചോദിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കാഴ്ചയയില്ലാത്തവര്‍ക്ക് കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി സജ്ജീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതാണ് അതെല്ലാം എന്നു വിമല്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

ഞങ്ങള്‍ നാലുപേര്‍ ‍മാത്രമേ ഉള്ളൂ എങ്കില്‍ പിന്നെ സമയം കളയാതെ കാര്യത്തിലേക്ക് കടക്കാം എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചിരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതാ വരുന്നു ചന്ദ്രേട്ടനും അങ്കിളും. പിന്നെ സെബിനും‍, ശിവകുമാര്‍ മാഷും(ചിന്ത) എത്തി. എന്നാല്‍ പിന്നെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടാവാം ബാക്കി കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്നു കരുതി, ഒരു റൌണ്ട് വെടി പൊട്ടിയപ്പോളേക്കും ദാണ്ടെ വരുന്നു അടുത്ത സംഘം. ആദര്‍ശ്, പിന്നാലെ തന്നെ ഷംസുദ്ദീന്‍ മാഷും ജോജുവും.

സ്വയം പരിചയപ്പെടല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ വിമല്‍ സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറിനെയും മലയാളം കമ്പ്യൂട്ടിങ്ങിനെയും പറ്റി അല്പം വിശദീകരിച്ചു. സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറിന്റെ വാണിജ്യവശങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി റെഡ് ഹാറ്റിനെ ഉദാഹരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് മാക്സിനും സംസാരിച്ചു. SMC-യെയും SMC ഇതുവരെ ചെയ്ത കാര്യങ്ങളെയും ഇനി ചെയ്യാനുദ്ധേശിക്കുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളേയും പറ്റി ഞാനും. അപ്പോഴേക്കും ജോര്‍ജ്ജും വന്നു.

ചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍ പിന്നേയും പലവഴിക്കും നീങ്ങി. പ്രഖ്യാപിത അജണ്ടയില്‍ നിന്നും അല്പം വഴിമാറിപ്പോയോ എന്ന് ചെറിയ ശങ്ക‍. കെഡിഇ – യുടെ തര്‍ജ്ജമയായിരുന്നു ഒത്തുചേരലിന്റെ പ്രാധാന അജണ്ടയെങ്കിലും മറ്റു ചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍ അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോഴേക്കും സമയം 12.30 ആയി. തര്‍ജ്ജമ എങ്ങനെ നടത്താം എന്നതിന്റെ പ്രത്യക്ഷീകരണ(എന്നെ തല്ലരുത്. demonstration എന്നാണ് ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചത്. മഷിതണ്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയതാണ്)വും പടം പിടിക്കലും കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പൊ സമയം 1.30. പറഞ്ഞുവന്നപ്പോള്‍ അങ്കിളിനും അത്ഭുതം. “ഇത്രയെയുള്ളോ സംഗതി? ഞാന്‍ കരുതി പ്രാദശികവത്കരണം എന്നൊക്കെ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോ എന്തോ കീറാമുട്ടി ആണെന്ന്” എന്ന മട്ട്. അങ്കിളിന്റെ കാര്യം അയല്‍ക്കാരനായ ആഷിക്കിനെ ഏല്പിച്ചു.

ഉച്ച കഴിഞ്ഞ ശേഷമേ തര്‍ജ്ജമക്കിരിക്കാന്‍ സാധിച്ചുള്ളൂ. കാര്യമായൊന്നും നടന്നുമില്ല. അപ്പോഴേക്കും അംഗസംഖ്യ 5 ആയി ചുരുങ്ങി. സെബിന് ആശുപത്രി വരെ പോകേണ്ടി വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അതു നാലായി. പിന്നെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റൊരു പ്രധാന പരിപാടിയെ പറ്റി ചിന്തിച്ചു (സംശയിക്കേണ്ട, തര്‍ജ്ജമയെപറ്റി അല്ല. ഭക്ഷണത്തെപ്പറ്റി). ഭക്ഷണം കഴിഞ്ഞുവന്ന ഞങ്ങള്‍ നേരെ സ്പേസ് ഓഫീസിലേക്ക് പോയി(FSF കുര്‍ത്തയും, gplV3 ടി-ഷര്‍ട്ടും വാങ്ങാന്‍). അവിടെ നിന്നും മടങ്ങിവന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ kdelibs4.po തുറന്ന് ഗുസ്തി തുടങ്ങി. കുറെ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ വിമല്‍ എറണാകുളത്തേക്ക് പോകാന്‍ ഇറങ്ങി. താമസിയാതെ മാക്സിനും ഇറങ്ങി. 5.30-ഓടു കൂടെ ഞാനും ആഷിക്കും സംഗതി കൂട്ടിക്കെട്ടി. PMG വരെ ആഷിക്കിന്റെ ബൈക്കില്‍. അവിടുന്ന് കൊല്ലം ഫാസ്റ്റില്‍ താമസസ്ഥലത്തേക്ക്.

വാല്‍ക്കഷ്ണം: ബസില്‍ കയറി കഴക്കൂട്ടത്തേക്ക് ടിക്കറ്റെടുത്തതേ ഓര്‍മയുള്ളൂ, ഒറ്റ ഉറക്കമായിരുന്നു. ഉണര്‍ന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഞെട്ടിപ്പോയി. വണ്ടി ഏതോ ബസ് സ്റ്റാന്റിലേക്ക് കയറുന്നു. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തിനും കഴക്കൂട്ടത്തിനും ഇടയില്‍ ഏതു സ്റ്റാന്റ് എന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഞാന്‍ ചാടിയിറങ്ങി. ഉറക്കപ്പിച്ച് വിട്ട് സ്ഥലം പിടികിട്ടാന്‍ കുറച്ച് സമയമെടുത്തു. ഭാഗ്യം, കണിയാപുരം വരെയേ എത്തിയുള്ളൂ. അവിടുന്നു ഒരു ബസ്സില്‍ കയറി കഴക്കൂട്ടത്തിറങ്ങി നേരെ റൂമിലേക്ക് പോന്നു. ഉണരാന്‍ കുറച്ചുകൂടെ വൈകിയിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍ കൊല്ലത്തിറങ്ങി നേരെ പോയി മാക്സിനെ ശല്യം ചെയ്യേണ്ടി വന്നേനെ.
